British artist Gareth Luxton (b. 1990) is known for his paintings and drawings, the subject of which explores the intricate beauty of the human experience, focusing on the vibrant interplay of everyday working-class people. Many of the figures in Gareth's work are inspired by South Essex and East London natives— people he has been around his entire life, others, from crossing paths on travels.
This artist’s work is a journey of transformation, rooted in the raw energy of graffiti and the unpredictability of painting. His approach to art is intuitive, often producing pieces with meanings that reveal themselves over time.
Being self-taught, graffiti was Gareth’s first artistic voice, drawn to its rebellious freedom and the joy of creating for the sake of expression, not financial. This early influence still permeates his work, though now it’s been distilled into something more allegorical and layered, focusing instead on capturing its essence—colour, line, and movement.
Allowing ‘mistakes’ to be visible in the work nods to the artists’ view of himself being a "work in progress" and putting importance on the journey more than the destination. The work has a focus on the lives of others, but with moments of self-reflection emerging unexpectedly.
