British artist Gareth Luxton (b. 1990) is known for his paintings and drawings, the subject of which explores the intricate beauty of the human experience, focusing on the spirit of everyday people and the vibrant interplay of colour as his primary language.
This artist’s work is a journey of transformation, rooted in the raw energy of graffiti and the unpredictability of painting. His approach to art is intuitive, often producing pieces with meanings that reveal themselves over time—without the need for words.
Being self-taught, graffiti was Gareth’s first artistic love, drawn to its rebellious freedom and the joy of creating for the sake of expression, not profit. This early influence still permeates his work, though now it’s been distilled into something more abstract and layered. Deconstructing the legibility of graffiti, focusing instead on capturing its essence—colour, texture, and movement.
The introduction of allowing ‘mistakes’ to be kept in the work nods to the artists’ graffiti roots, but the pieces are now evolving into something more layered and complex. The work feels like a visual composition, with moments of harmony emerging unexpectedly.
